In 14 essays, important aspects of the Greek portraits from various periods and dynasties are dealt with by well-known portrait researchers.
The individual portrait is an "invention" of ancient Greek artists and forms an essential basis of our European culture. The royal portraits of the successors of Alexander the Great are the focus of this book. Even short-lived rulers attached great importance to showing their portraits quickly on coins, so that the picture catalog can show a complete portrait series of over 250 Hellenistic rulers. This enables us to see the human facial features of these kings and their wives, as well as the wish of their subjects to be seen as "god-close". Together with the book "Portraits - 500 Years of Roman Coin Portraits" by the same publisher Andreas Pangerl, who again contributed to the coin photographs, these books cover almost 1000 years of ancient portraiture.
