The Military Postal History of Ireland(FAI Publication No. 27 (2008)written by the actual FAI-President Heinz-Jürgen Kumpf.This handbook is the very first and unique comprehensive study of the military postal history of the mail and postmarks of the barracks, camps, posts and other military locations on the island of Ireland including the units serving therein.It also covers British Forces mail in Northern Ireland as well as the mail of US Americas and other foreign presences in Ireland, and finally the mail of Irish Defence Forces on overseas service with the United Nations or other international organisations.The handbook starts with the period of the Early Irish Military Mail since 1796 when the soldiers were given the privilegeto send letters at a special rate of 1 d. Illustrations of the first handstamps from Castlebar and Athlone used for soldier ́s privilege 1 pre-paid letters are shown as well as mail from the Crimean and Boer War and the Irish Military participation worldwide such as the East India Company. The major chapters consist of an extensive documentation of the postmarks and mail of the Irish Military Camps and Barracks and Department of Defence and other military locations and units in Ireland from the very beginning until 1922 and thereafter. In particular 70 pages are dedicated to the postal history of the Curragh Camp. Special chapters are dedicated to the Military Aviation as well as to the Naval Forces in Ireland, the British Military Mail in Northern Ireland after 1922 and the United States Military Mail in Ireland since 1917. A chapter covering the Mail of the Prisoner of War Camps to and from Ireland in World War I and World War II is also part of this handbook.The illustrations consist of letters, postmarks, stamps, military unit ́s letterheads, cachets, postcards etc. most of them have not yet been known, seen or shown before.
