Canadian Prisoners of War and Civilian Internees in Europe during the Great War by J. Michael Powell is an amazing study of Canadians held in camps in Europe during World War I. It has taken the author years to obtain the hundreds of covers and postcards sent both to and from Canada, as well as collateral photographs, images of postmarks and other items – and that was just the beginning of the effort. The author then conducted an incredible amount of research to not only locate each of the dozens of camps geographically, but also to identify mail right down to the name, rank and unit of the sender or receiver at those camps.

J Michael Powell, BSc, FSA, FCIA is an actuary and long-time philatelist who took up the hobby under the tutelage of his father at a young age. After retiring early from professional practice due to health reasons, he took up the study of postal history and has exhibited at the national level on several occasions. His exhibits have included his Canadian POW and internment camp material as well as related foreign subjects. He has also exhibited his collection of the 1934 Jacques Cartier commemorative stamp issue of Canada.

Kanadische Kriegsgefangene und zivile Internierte in Europa während des Ersten Weltkriegs von J. Michael Powell ist eine erstaunliche Studie über Kanadier, die während des Ersten Weltkriegs in Lagern in Europa festgehalten wurden. Es hat Jahre gedauert, bis der Autor die Hunderte von Deckblättern und Postkarten erhalten hat, die beide verschickt wurden von und nach Kanada sowie Begleitfotos, Bilder von Poststempeln und anderen Gegenständen - und das war erst der Anfang der Bemühungen. Der Autor führte dann eine unglaubliche Menge an Recherchen durch, um nicht nur jedes der Dutzenden von Lagern geografisch zu lokalisieren, sondern auch die Post bis hin zu Name, Rang und Einheit des Absenders oder Empfängers in diesen Lagern zu identifizieren.

J Michael Powell, BSc, FSA, FCIA ist ein Aktuar und langjähriger Philatelist, der das Hobby in jungen Jahren unter der Anleitung seines Vaters aufnahm. Nachdem er sich aus gesundheitlichen Gründen vorzeitig aus der beruflichen Praxis zurückgezogen hatte, nahm er das Studium der Postgeschichte auf und stellte mehrfach auf nationaler Ebene aus. Zu seinen Exponaten gehörten sein kanadisches Kriegsgefangenen- und Internierungslagermaterial sowie verwandte ausländische Themen. Er hat auch seine Sammlung der Jacques Cartier Gedenkmarkenausgabe von Kanada von 1934 ausgestellt.
