For the last five years, I have been privileged to work with Gustaf Douglas RDP FRPSL on his project to develop his classic Finland 1845-1859 traditional philately collection on ‘The Hand-Printed Oval Design’. One thing I have experienced from the project is the lack of an international handbook on the postal history and development of Finland. To compile the information needed to make a complete treatment of the classic period of Finland has proved to be difficult if you not are able to read primary and secondary sources in the Finnish language. And besides, the sources published in Finnish have to my knowledge proven to be not „complete” and coherent on the topics, I have only found information piece by piece. I have missed a comprehensive and „modern” publication. However, as a miracle für onward projects on Finland, its philately and postal history, I feel relieved about the work which in the near future will be published by Dr. Wolf Hess (b. 1945) from Germany.
Wolf Hess is well-known to the philatelic world, as he signed The Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 2010. So, there should be no further need to introduce Wolf and his qualifications. Wolf and his brother were inspired to collect stamps by their father, who among other areas collected Finland. Almost half a decade later, Wolf himself felt prompted to look into Finland’s postal history. His studies were presented in the exhibit ‘Postal History Grand Duchy Finland up to 1884’ which won the National Grand Prix at Finland 2008, and the year after the International Grand Prix at BULGARIA 2009 in Sofia.
Coinciding almost with Wolf’s 75th birthday, his studies on this area are presented in his new book (304 pages), published and offered by Phil*Creativ. I was recently given the opportunity to have a preview of the book and said loudly and clearly to myself: „YES – THANK YOU - Wolf”. By saying that, I realised that Wolf must have experienced the same as I have on the unavailability of an international book on the postal history of Finland, so he decided to author such a book himself.
What attracts me most to the book is that, as expected, the contents are naturally developed and treated chronologically, but its nature is very straightforward, narrative and clear. Wolf has adapted his skilfulness from exhibiting, not only of postal history, but also of thematic philately where he in 2007 was European Champion, to his authorship. The whole content is very well disposed and structured; it is given narrative development with the necessary cross-references and, most important with applicable images and examples, in a straightforward presentation. The treatment of the scope of this handbook is excellent.
Over the years, Wolf has accumulated very many/the best examples of postal history adaptations, i.e. examples and practices from as early as the 17th century and onward. With comprehensive captions following each example and illustration, the book develops the knowledge of the markings, the routes and the rates in detail. This book will in the future be recognised fully für its value in this regard. In addition, the book presents multiple original rate tables [Image: Page 26] and maps [Image: Page 31] from different periods.
One thing which in impressive is the detail given to the section on the marcophily of Finland, i.e. the introduction and the use of the early handstamps and their adaptations. [Image: Page 56] From the preface of the book, we learn that the marcophily of Finland originally was a speciality of Wolf’s father, and in Wolf’s book this has been taken forward with careful study and presentation.
This book is a must have für every philatelic and postal history scholar of Finland, as it is an invaluable source published fully in the English language – also making it international. The book also deserves recognition as a very good example of a clear structure and development of its scope – the book is easy to use and to find the information one is looking for. Finally, as the book depicts many of the most important "gems" of Finland from this period, it is an important census and a code breaker to understand the routes and the rates to their destinations.

In den letzten fünf Jahren durfte ich mit Gustaf Douglas RDP FRPSL an seinem Projekt zur Entwicklung seiner klassischen finnischen traditionellen Philateliesammlung 1845-1859 über „The Hand-Printed Oval Design„ arbeiten. Eine Sache, die ich aus dem Projekt erfahren habe, ist das Fehlen eines internationalen Handbuchs zur Postgeschichte und Entwicklung Finnlands. Es hat sich als schwierig erwiesen, die Informationen zusammenzustellen, die für eine vollständige Behandlung der klassischen finnischen Zeit erforderlich sind, wenn Sie nicht in der Lage sind, Primär- und Sekundärquellen in finnischer Sprache zu lesen. Außerdem haben sich die auf Finnisch veröffentlichten Quellen meines Wissens als nicht „vollständig„ und kohärent zu den Themen erwiesen. Ich habe nur Stück für Stück Informationen gefunden. Ich habe eine umfassende und „moderne„ Veröffentlichung verpasst. Als Wunder für weißere Projekte zu Finnland, seiner Philatelie und Postgeschichte bin ich jedoch erleichtert über die Arbeit, die in naher Zukunft von Dr. Wolf Hess (geb. 1945) aus Deutschland veröffentlicht wird.
Wolf Hess ist in der philatelistischen Welt bekannt, als er 2010 The Roll of Distinguished Philatelists unterzeichnete. Es sollte also nicht weißer erforderlich sein, Wolf und seine Qualifikationen vorzustellen. Wolf und sein Bruder wurden von ihrem Vater, der unter anderem Finnland sammelte, zum Sammeln von Briefmarken inspiriert. Fast ein halbes Jahrzehnt später fühlte sich Wolf selbst aufgefordert, sich mit der finnischen Postgeschichte zu befassen.
Seine Studien wurden in der Ausstellung „Postgeschichte Großherzogtum Finnland bis 1884„ vorgestellt, die 2008 den Nationalen Grand Prix in Finnland und ein Jahr nach dem Internationalen Grand Prix in BULGARIA 2009 in Sofia gewann.
Fast zeitgleich mit Wolfs 75. Geburtstag werden seine Studien zu diesem Thema in seinem neuen Buch (304 Seiten) vorgestellt, das von Phil * Creativ veröffentlicht und angeboten wird. Ich hatte kürzlich die Gelegenheit, eine Vorschau des Buches zu haben, und sagte mir laut und deutlich: „JA - DANKE - Wolf„. Als ich das sagte, wurde mir klar, dass Wolf das Gleiche erlebt haben muss wie ich über die Nichtverfügbarkeit eines internationalen Buches über die Postgeschichte Finnlands, und so beschloss er, ein solches Buch selbst zu verfassen.
Was mich an dem Buch am meisten reizt, ist, dass der Inhalt erwartungsgemäß auf natürliche Weise chronologisch entwickelt und behandelt wird, aber seine Natur ist sehr einfach, narrativ und klar. Wolf hat seine Geschicklichkeit aus der Ausstellung nicht nur der Postgeschichte, sondern auch der thematischen Philatelie, in der er 2007 Europameister war, an seine Urheberschaft angepasst. Der gesamte Inhalt ist sehr gut angeordnet und strukturiert; Es wird eine narrative Entwicklung mit den erforderlichen Querverweißen und, was am wichtigsten bei anwendbaren Bildern und Beispielen ist, in einer einfachen Darstellung gegeben. Die Behandlung des Umfangs dieses Handbuchs ist ausgezeichnet.
Im Laufe der Jahre hat Wolf sehr viele / die besten Beispiele für Anpassungen der Postgeschichte gesammelt, d. H. Beispiele und Praktiken ab dem 17. Jahrhundert und danach. Mit umfassenden Bildunterschriften, die jedem Beispiel und jeder Abbildung folgen, entwickelt das Buch das Wissen über die Markierungen, die Routen und die Raten im Detail. Dieses Buch wird in Zukunft in vollem Umfang für seinen diesbezüglichen Wert anerkannt. Darüber hinaus ENTHÄLT das Buch mehrere Original-Preistabellen [Bild: Seite 26] und Karten [Bild: Seite 31] aus verschiedenen Zeiträumen.
Eine Sache, die beeindruckend ist, ist das Detail, das dem Abschnitt über die Markophilität Finnlands gegeben wurde, d. H. Die Einführung und Verwendung der frühen Handstempel und ihrer Anpassungen. [Bild: Seite 56] Aus dem Vorwort des Buches erfahren wir, dass die Markophilie Finnlands ursprünglich eine Spezialität von Wolfs Vater war, und in Wolfs Buch wurde dies mit sorgfältiger Untersuchung und Präsentation vorangetrieben.
Dieses Buch ist ein Muss für jeden Philatelisten und Postgeschichtswissenschaftler Finnlands, da es eine unschätzbare Quelle ist, die vollständig in englischer Sprache veröffentlicht wurde - und es auch international macht. Das Buch verdient auch Anerkennung als sehr gutes Beispiel für eine klare Struktur und Entwicklung seines Umfangs - das Buch ist einfach zu verwenden und die gesuchten Informationen zu finden. Da das Buch viele der wichtigsten „Juwelen„ Finnlands aus dieser Zeit darstellt, ist es eine wichtige Volkszählung und ein Code-Breaker, um die Routen und die Preise zu ihren Zielen zu verstehen.
Dieses Buch sei ein Muss für jeden Philatelisten und Postgeschichtler der finnischen Philatelie. Es enthalte unschätzbar wertvolle Daten und Fakten, außerdem einen Zensus der bedeutendsten Juwelen der Finnland-Philatelie sowie den ultimativen Schlüssel, die Routen und Postraten zu den verschiedensten Destinationen weltweit zu verstehen.  Die endgültige Version des ca. 300 Seiten-Hardcover-Buches wird zur LONDON 2020 im Mai vorgestellt.
