Hørlyck, Peter The Postal Stationery of Nigeria
Edition 2023
Ray Harris, who completed the final 10% of this book after the death of his friend Peter, began collecting stamps aged 7 and continued to accumulate a general collection until his early twenties. Nigeria became his specialisation as a consequence of having had two uncles working there. He joined the West Africa Study Circle in 1971 and soon decided to ignore the pre-1900 era. Building his collection was quite slow while paid employment kept him busy but it became more active in the 2000s. He started email correspondence in 2005 with a recent new member, Peter Hørlyck, often about postal stationery in online and other commercial auctions, and after they met when Peter came to England in about 2011 they became close friends.
Work on this book was already well underway and Ray introduced Peter to The National Archives and the British Library. They supported each other in their research, Ray concentrating on aerogrammes and Peter on the wider range of postal stationery.
When Peter’s illness prevented his travelling again to England, Ray was able to continue the research under Peter’s instruction. The book was already about 90% complete at Peter’s death in late 2021, so Ray, having been given clear guidance on what still needed doing, was able to fi nish it as he had promised.

Nigeria may not seem the obvious choice of country für a specialist in postal stationery. With a rather limited set of postal stationery classes and issues involved, the number of pages in the Higgins & Gage catalogue is very small. Furthermore, with most issues up to 1960 printed by De la Rue and with their high quality of work, not many varieties are found. However, when we include the precursors from Lagos, Oil Rivers/Niger Coast
Protectorate and Southern Nigeria, and if we look beyond the Higgins & Gage catalogue, a whole new world is

unravelled with many possibilities of specialisation turning up, as well as many mysteries.
